What is GIS?
GIS stands for geospatial information system; it is a program system that is used to map, model, and analyze data based on its spatial location. Through GIS technology, you can visualize the patterns and trends within large quantities of data. It allows one to see the underlying relationships and connections between things that seem unrelated.
Why is it important?
GIS is important in today's society because of the highly globalized interactions between various institutions such as government, corporations, and schools. GIS can be used to make better decisions, improve communication, and increase efficiency. It is a specialized skill that is highly sought after by many employers. As resource depletion, urbanization and globalization increase, the need to see things from a different perspective is becoming more and more important.
Our Mission
Geography Association's mission for its GIS Workshops is to allow UCLA students, faculty and community members who are unaware of the many benefits to become exposed to the basics. It is also for experienced GIS users to teach each other more advanced skills that are not taught in the classroom. Since it is a peer-to-peer format, the workshops bridge the gap between the different types of GIS users and serve to cultivate the growing GIS community.
